Power punk shoes

At last weekend’s Vogue Festival, all the Voguettes wore spike-toed pumps with stabby heels: polished, powerful, but a little bit punk. Which chimes nicely with May's major fashion theme - it's punk month people! As the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gets ready to unveil its Punk: From Chaos To Couture exhibition, designers have rushed to join in on the rebel rousing. And while some go the whole head-to-heel hog, other are just dipping a toe in, literally and figuratively speaking.
If you can’t see yourself swathed in tartan bondage pants and safety pin dresses, focus on footwear instead. The Vogue girls went for white stilettos, which added just enough attitude to their otherwise ladylike pleated skirts and sheath dresses. Especially when teamed with off-beat ankle socks (as seen on fashion director Lucinda Chambers - a style maverick if ever there was one). Meanwhile, studded stilettos continue to have a moment. Valentino's cult T-straps sprinkled with metal pyramids mix grown up luxe with a youthful spirit - no wonder they're selling in their thousands. Ditto Christian Louboutin 's studded heels, which are the perfect foil to a prim dress.
But of course, it's not all about heels. Dr Martens have always been the shoe of choice for hardcore punks, now they come adorned with black metal studs for punk with extra punch. Possibly, most wearable of all though are the pointy, buckle-strapped ankle boots beloved of uptown girls and Camden kids alike. Back in the day, all the indie kids would buy theirs at Kensington Market, now the fash pack bulk buy the posh versions by Toga and Tabitha Simmons. Naturally, the high street pays its own tribute, with buckled flats offered by Office, Topshop, New Look and Aldo. How to wear? With straight tailored trousers, second-skin jeans, floral dresses, silk onesies – in fact, anything you fancy. Well what’s the legacy of punk, if not a can-do attitude to do things your own way?

Trending now: Demi-crop tops

Where do you stand on crop tops? Have you fully embraced, baring your belly to all (in this spring chill – how brave), or are you slightly reticent?
There’s been a bit of a sea change in fashion of late, in which the bodycon micro-dresses have given way to a slightly more modest look. It’s more covered up and seemingly prim, but not altogether nun-like. Taking the place of show-off thighs and bodycon dresses are more subtle glimpses of skin, from sheer, gauzy fabrics to peekaboo cutouts and midriff-baring tops. While the big midriff story comes from designers like Marc Jacobs (who showed bare ribs at Louis Vuitton) and celebs like Rihanna who will flash her abs at any given moment, there are ways to make the crop top look pretty, polished and far from clubby.
Helping things along is the high waist skirt or trouser that rests above the natural waistline, thus avoiding any hope of belly-button flashing. I think the more tailored and dressy the bottoms, the better this looks. And to accompany them, what I call the demi-crop top. The aim being to expose a slice of skin when you move around, but otherwise to be chicly covered, hence the top hovering just above the waistband of the skirt.
Even better? Make your demi-crop top a tailored one, whether a sleeveless shell top, a long-sleeved graphic-stripe one or even a retro-style jacket to go with a matching slim skirt. Fabric-wise, look for stiff cotton, wool or even tailored lace – à la the Stella McCartney shirt I’ve been coveting. And if all that still feels too far out of your comfort zone, then pop a slightly longer sheer singlet top underneath and let it poke through. Voila, a sophisticated take on the crop top, suitable for work and play.

This weekend sees the return of the hotly anticipated Vogue Festival. With an amazing line up of speakers from Victoria Beckham to Cara Delevingne it is the hottest ticket around after Fashion Week.
This will be a fashion-y affair so choose your outfit as you would for the front row. We love this pastel boucle mini skirt, team it with a western blouse and brogues for a chic but casual look. Top it off with tortoiseshell cat eye sunnies.
Many talks still have tickets available so snap them up now before they go.
